San Germán de Puerto Rico, a municipality with Catalan heritage

Imatge
Just take a look at the historic coat of arms of the American town of San Germán de Puerto Rico to detect the omnipresent influence of the Catalan-Aragonese crown. The current town of San Germán is a municipality located in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico. It is one of the oldest cities on the island and has a rich history that dates back to the early days of Hispanic colonization. The city was founded in 1570 by Diego de Torres y Velasco, becoming the second oldest city in Puerto Rico (the first was Caparra, where Juan Ponce de León had his residence). However, this point is not clear, as the town's website also states that it was founded on August 12, 1573, by Governor Juan de Céspedes. The confusion is understandable when considering a curious anomaly: this town changed locations and was refounded many times. Its original territory was so extensive (Partida de San Germán) that from its fragmentation, 22 towns were created, which is why it is known as "the founder o...

The Catalans of Gaul expanded to the British Isles: the Catuvellauni

Imatge
Catuvellauni coin  The ancient Catalans or Catalauni were one of the founding peoples of Gaul. However, in this article we will find that they were also from the British Isles. The supposed British tribe of the Catuvellauni or Catuvellans , is actually a branch of the people of the Catalauni or Catalans of Gaul that split due to the arrival of the people of the Belgians in their territory, in the area of the current Champagne (former Catalan or Catalaunian Plains ). As we have discussed in a previous article, we know from the studies of French historians Fabien Régnier and Jean-Pierre Drouin, published in his book ‘ Les peuplesfondateurs à l'origine de la Gaule ’ (2012), that the arrival in Gaul of the Belgian people, coming from the Danube area, altered the balance of the area of the river Mare (in Latin, river Matrona , present Marne ) and forced the mobility of the old Catalans and other towns. A queen of the House of Barcelona behind the creation of the first Cambridge college?

Imatge
Coat of arms of Peterhouse, the first college of the University of Cambridge, England. As it can be seen in the image that opens the article, the coat of arms depicting Peterhouse of Cambridge is formed, in its central part, by four sticks of gules in a golden field, with a border around them with eight old crowns. This is, who can deny it, very similar to the Catalan royal coat of arms. When we look at it, the first thing we ask ourselves is whether Catalonia and the House of Barcelona -who led in the creation of Catalonia and, later, the Catalan-Aragonese Crown- might be related to the founding of this illustrious college, the first of one of the most prestigious universities in the world. And as we will see in this article, many historical details point in this direction. The coat of arms of Peterhouse college of Cambridge at present. Peterhouse is the oldest of the colleges of the University of Cambridge, England, and was founded by Hugh de Balsham, bishop o...
